Bernwode Brokat has an outstanding temperament, very correct conformation and carries successful German bloodlines that are still proving themselves at the top of European Pony Competition today. Brokat is proving to be a valuable asset to British breeding achieving the titles of 2009, 2010 & 2011 BEF Futurity 'Leading Sire of Sports Ponies' in the UK based on his foals to 3 yr olds. In 2011, Brokat ranked 17th on the overall BEF Sire list, the only pony sire to achieve a top 20 placing. Brokat’s older offspring are also showing their talent and trainability under saddle, his daughter Mademoiselle still holds the highest mark ever awarded at an SPSS Mare Grading standing 2009 Mare Champion. Brokat also sired the 2010 SPSS Champion Stallion, Bernwode Broadway who is currently in training for FEI dressage competition. Brokat’s stock also show a big, athletic jump, his 2010 filly foal and 2011 colt foal being Champion Event Ponies at the Futurity Evaluations, both achieving Elite status and qualifying for the finals at Osberton. Alongside this successful stud career Brokat, and his current year old rider (then just 12 years old), were selected to train as members of the GB International Pony Dressage squad (GB top 10 potential combinations for 2012 International competition) over the winter 2011/12. Due to his FEI Competition commitments Brokat will only be available for stud duties later in the 2012 stud season.

Bernwode Brokat’s bloodlines trace back to some of our superb British ponies such as Bwlch Hill Wind. He also carries the time honoured Downland blood found in so many of the most successful ponies in both Great Britain and mainland Europe.
Sire: Brokat's sire Brillant was one of the most prolific sires of successful dressage and jumping ponies in Germany, having competed himself to a high level in both disciplines in open classes. For three consecutive years Brillant was the top sire of German dressage ponies and he was one of the top three sires over a period of six years! He is famous for passing his kind, easy temperament and athletic sporting ability to his children. Brillant sired many State Premium daughters and a remarkable total of thirty seven licensed sons. Sadly this wonderful sire passed away in 2004.
Dam: Cornelia, Brokat’s dam, is a German Head Studbook Mare descended from top class British Riding Ponies including Bwlch Valentino.
Damsire: Diamant II won a Gold Medal for Germany as a member of the 1982 European Pony Dressage Team. This notable pony stallion sired a large number of licensed sons and State Premium daughters and his lines remain prominent in many of today’s top competition ponies. |

Brokat was imported to Great Britain as a three year old in 2000 and, during 2001, he began his ridden career under twelve year old Louise Crutcher. This combination won their first attempted affiliated dressage competition in January 2003 setting the pattern for an excellent season that culminated in representing England at the Blarney Dressage Festival in Ireland where they not only helped the England team to Gold Medal victory but also took the Individual Gold Medal on 73.5%.
At Brokat’s first Premier League show in 2004, Brokat finished in 5th place in the FEI Team Test ahead of two former European Team ponies! On returning home he covered a waiting mare to end a perfect day and to set a pattern for his future career! Since then Brokat has combined an extremely active stud career alongside competing and training with a variety of younger pony riders proving to be an outstanding FEI schoolmaster.
In September 2011, Brokat was invited to attend ‘Selection Trials’ with 12 yr old Ruth Hole. On the strength of his performance at these trials the combination was selected for the coveted ‘International Pony Dressage Squad’ and has been attending the winter training with Peter Storr under the watchful eyes of the GB Pony Team selectors. This is a remarkable achievement for a pony who has also headed the Sire Rankings in the same year.

In May 2012, the SPSS announced that Brokat had been awarded the accolade of "ELITE" by the studbook. This prestigious status is given to those stallions (and mares) that have either represented their country at a FEI international competition (under saddle) or are the sire/dam of a FEI international competition pony/horse. Brokat joins a select group with just 4 other ELITE stallions currently registered with the SPSS for the 2012 stud season.
Brokat earned his "ELITE" by representing Great Britain at the FEI International Dressage Competition at Zilveren Spoor, Moorsele, Belgium (17-20 May 2012) ridden by 13 year old Ruth Hole and they are pictured (right) going to warm up at the show. Bernwode Brokat is a consistent sire of First Premium & Elite youngstock and has already sired two SPSS licensed Stallions including the 2010 Stallion Grading Champion and the 2009 Champion of Mare Grading.
Bernwode Brokat was approved and licensed with Weser Ems Studbook, the German Oldenburg studbook for ponies. He sired one foal, born in February 2001, before being imported to Great Britain as a three year old in 2000. Since that time Brokat has attracted a wide range of mare types each stud season, achieving an excellent record of pregnancies from one insemination. Brokat's popularity has increased annually as his children continue to impress with many mare owners returning for second or third foals. In 2004, Brokat was promoted to ‘Life Graded' status by the SPSS on the strength of the quality of his offspring and his successful ridden career.
In 2006, Brokat's eldest son Bernwode Benedict successfully licensed with the SPSS and one of his 2 year old sons was awarded a First Premium at the British Breeding Futurity and stood Reserve Champion 2 year old Pony at the Final.
In 2007, ALL of Brokat's entered stock achieved First Premiums in the Futurity Series followed by First and Elite Premiums for his children in 2008 & 2009.
Following the 2009 Futurity Evaluations Brokat ranked as the Top UK Sire of Sports Ponies and was also presented with an award as The BHF & British Breeding ‘Leading Sire of Sports Ponies over All Years’. In 2009, Brokat also received the Sports Pony Studbook Society’s prestigious ‘Dancer Medal’ awarded annually for excellence in breeding or competition.
At the 2009 SPSS annual Mare grading, Brokat's three year old daughter, Mademoiselle, graded on a huge mark of 87.12% which qualified her for the prestigious Head Studbook. Not only did this young mare become the SPSS 2009 Champion Mare but she was also awarded the highest mark ever achieved at an SPSS mare grading to date.
In 2010 and 2011, Bernwode Brokat repeated his achievement and proved himself as the Futurity 'Leading Sire of Sports Ponies' with one of his 2010 filly foals being Champion Event Pony at the 2010 Futurity Evaluations, gaining Elite status and going on to place 4th at the finals at Osberton which was the highest placing achieved by any of the young Sports Ponies throughout the series.
Brokat's older offspring are now showing their talent and trainability under saddle. He is sire of the 2010 SPSS Champion Stallion, Bernwode Broadway, who gained the highest marks throughout that SPSS Grading weekend and is currently being produced towards FEI dressage. Another of his offspring was Reserve Champion and top 4 yr old at the 2010 Young Dressage Pony Championships. Indeed, there were three of his daughters competing sensibly in the 4 yr old class at the Young Dressage Pony Championships, all showing huge potential.
Several of Brokat’s offspring can be seen lower on this page or at www.bernwodestud.com. The stud, together with the mare owners who have used Borkat's services, are delighted with the quality and athletic ability of these youngsters, all of whom have inherited their sire's movement and delightful temperament. |
