The third SPSS sponsored Young Dressage Pony Championships took place on Sunday 30th September at Bury Farm Equestrian Club, Bucks. There were 16 ponies entered - across the 3 age related sections - and 15 ponies competed on the day. Entry was open to BD registered and un-registered ponies up to and including 148cms (149 cms with shoes) in height and riders/owners did not have to be BD members and could be any age. |

The Overall Champion was the top 4 year old pony, the British-bred stallion WFS Top Red (pictured on left wearing his SPSS Thermatex Rug prize), ridden by Linsay Coleridge Smith and owned by Sarah Steggall and Elaine Coleridge Smith. Top Red was bred by Yvonne Wood and Sarah Steggall and had been Champion Stallion at the previous day's SPSS Stallion Grading (full grading results here)
Reserve Champion was the top 5 year old, the British-bred and SPSS graded stallion LE Chiffre ridden by his owner Samantha Brown and bred by her mother, Bev Brown.
Third placed overall was last year's Reserve Champion, the British bred gelding Johnny Cash, ridden by Fern Roach, owned by Noah Springall and bred by Charlotte Springall.

The SPSS is very grateful for the support of British Dressage, who kindly donated vouchers to the highest scoring pony in each age group, Wish Bands who kindly donated a beaded browband to the Reserve Champion and discount vouchers to all competitors and Bury Farm who hosted the event.
We were delighted to have as judges, FEI International Judge, breeder & trainer, Jennie Loriston-Clarke and Rachel Hillier, who as well as being a British Dressage List Two Judge also used to be a British Dressage Pony Team Selector. Jenny is pictured on the right presenting the BD voucher to Reserve Champion, LE Chiffre and his rider Samantha Brown. On the left is Jacke Mathieson who presented the Wish Bands beaded browband that she'd generously donated as a prize.
Overall, the SPSS were thrilled that not just the Champion & Reserve, but all four of the top scoring ponies are British-bred and three of them are also SPSS registered and graded stallions. |

Overall Champion and winner of the 4 Year old Class was WFS Top Red, ridden by Linsay Coleridge Smith and owned by Sarah Steggall and Elaine Coleridge Smith. Top Red won £75, a SPSS Thermatex rug, and a voucher for a year's free British Dressage Horse Registration (kindly donated by British Dressage).
Top Red (known as "Junior") is a British bred Sports Pony registered with the SPSS. He is by the German-bred, Elite SPSS dressage stallion, Top Yellow who was bred by the renown German trainer Johann Hinnemann and won the prestigious German Bundeschampionat as a 3 and 4 year old, before being champion at his 30 day stallion test with the highest score they'd ever awarded to a pony stallion. Top Yellow competed internationally for Belgium before moving to Austria and then coming to the UK initially as a FEI schoolmaster and then to stand at stud. Top Red's dam Bernwode Poppy Red is by another Bundeschampionat, Pilgrims Red. Top Red was presented at the SPSS Stallion Grading the previous day where he excelled and finished as Champion Stallion. |

Reserve Champion was another British-bred Sports Pony, the top scoring 5 year old SPSS graded stallion LE Chiffre ridden by his owner Samantha Brown and they won £50, a beaded browband (kindly presented by Jacke Mathieson of Wish Bands) and a voucher for 50% off British Dressage Horse Registration (kindly supplied by British Dressage). This has been a great year for LE Chiffre as in his first year of competing, he has won at both Elementary and Medium levels and qualified for the British Dressage National Championships at Elementary Open level where, ridden by Becky Moody, he was the only entrant under 16hh and one of only two 5 year olds.
LE Chiffre was bred by Sam's mother, Bev Brown and is by Sam's former international dressage pony, the SPSS Elite graded, Caesar 171. Remarkably, of the 16 entrants, four were by Caesar 171, who stands with LE Chiffre at Sam's Godrics Stud near Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne & Wear. LE Chiffre's dam, Tiger Lily has several notable ponies in her pedigree, including the highly acclaimed sire Dancer (known in the UK as Broomford Dancer and a SPSS Elite sire) and the mare German State Premium mare, Kaprice, who also appears in the second generation of WFS Top Red's pedigree. |

The £25 for 3rd place overall and a SPSS Visor went to the second placed 5 year old pony, the British bred gelding Johnny Cash, ridden by Fern Roach and owned by Noah Springall. Johnny is a SHB(GB) registered pony by The Bay Briar (TB) out of Macy Gray (New Forest) and was bred by Mrs C Springall.
In 2011, as a four year old, Johnny was Reserve Champion ridden by Phoebe Peters as Fern, who had been producing Johnny as an event pony, broke her collar bone 2 weeks before the show. That Phoebe and Johnny did so well when Phoebe had only ridden him a few times was testament to Fern's work and it was great that Fern was fit and able to present him herself this year. A versatile all rounder, Johnny Cash also competed at the P(UK) Burghley Event Pony Championships with Fern in 2012 and with her older sister Poppy deputising in 2011. As Fern is too old for ponies at the end of the year, the ride on Johnny is being taken over by her younger sister, Jasmine, and they are entered in the SPSS Young Jumping and Young Eventing Pony Championships at the end of October. |

Top 6 Year Old Pony and winner of a voucher for 50% off British Dressage Horse Registration (kindly supplied by British Dressage) was the SPSS graded stallion, Rosewater I Claudius.
"Claude" is owned by his breeders, Rosewater Stud's mother & daughter team, Sarah Eberle and Lucy Northcott and Claude was ridden by Samantha Brown who used compete Claude's sire, the SPSS Elite graded dressage pony, Caesar 171. Prior to moving to be based with Sam a few months ago, Claude's training had been delayed due to a lack of facilities at his owner's yard. Now Claude has moved he is expected to make good progress and it is hoped that a suitable pony rider be identified for him through The Equine Sports Academy (T.E.S.A) mentoring programme. |

The SPSS Teddy for the youngest rider went to 11 year old Emma Bond who was third in the 4 Year Old section riding her mother, Jane Bond's, pure bred Morgan gelding, Monnington Fresco. Bred by Monnington Morgans, Fresco is by the multiple World Champion Morgan, HVK Bell Flaire out of Monnington Artiste (by Monnington Verdi).
Emma has backed and brought on Fresco herself with the help of her trainer, the late Laura Fry, and this competition was the first time that Emma had competed without Laura's help and all agreed that she did very well in a class with many much more senior and professional riders. |
