IN-HAND SHOW 2007 - CPR AWARD WINNER

There was a special award at the 2007 In-Hand Premium Show on 13th October 2007.  This award was presented by the Central Prefix Register (CPR) to the owner and breeder of highest scoring pony/horse with a SPSS pedigree passport and CPR prefix.  This was Warford Saskatchewan, a 3 year old filly who graded into the SPSS Head Studbook in the morning and then impressed the In-Hand Show judge, Lynne Crowden (of Woodlander Stud), to be Overall Reserve Champion and as the Overall Champion was a German-bred mare, take the CPR award.

Warford Saskatchewan is by the BWBS & SPSS graded stallion Aimbry Chester out of the HIS mare Holmeswood Meadow (by the Thoroughbred Drumberg). As the owner and the breeder Candice Hadfield received £300!  The SPSS is grateful to the CPR for their kind sponsorship of this special award which gave an added dimension to the 2007 In-Hand Show.

THISTLEDOWN COPPER LUSTRE

The SPSS is delighted to announce that Thistledown Copper Lustre has been awarded Permanent Graded status due to his performance achievements and the quality of his offspring.  This year, the 6 year old stallion qualified for the British Dressage North West Summer Regional Championships at Somerford Park, Congleton and competed at Novice Open and Elementary Open levels. Competing against horses, his owner, Penny Walster, reports that she was really pleased with his Novice Open score of 64.17% and ending up in 13th Place from 32 starters, not quite in the prizes but a very good score for the BD Regionals. The next day he was 20th in the Elementary – another good result considering that he is not yet established at this level.

FUTURITY YOUNG HORSE EVALUATIONS - RESULTS SO FAR

The 2007 Baileys Horse Feeds / British Breeding Futurity Young Horse Evaluations are now almost complete.  The remaining date and venue for the youngstock and 4 year old assessments is 30th August at The Grange, Devon.  Entries are now closed.

Note that at the Futurity the horses/ponies are graded against a standard and not each other so there is no question of a pony being at a disadvantage compared to a small horse though they are both in the same class.  Spectators are welcome at all events.

Click here for a  consolidated league table of results for ponies and small horses.  After 5 of the 6 evaluations, the SPSS registered foal, Ruby Rouge (out of the SPSS Elite Graded mare, Sapphire Blue), is the highest scoring pony with a score of 8.9.  Impressively, Ruby Rouge scored four 9s with only one lower score.  Next highest scoring SPSS registered pony is Rosewater Breant (by Bernwode Brokat) with a score of 8.59.  Both of these ponies were awarded first premiums.

IMPORTANT – NEW AWARD FOR SPSS STALLIONS

The SPSS is delighted to announce that there will now be a special award for the highest placed SPSS licensed/graded stallion on the BAILEYS HORSE FEEDS / BRITISH BREEDING FUTURITY YOUNG HORSE EVALUATIONS Active stallion list.  The highest placed SPSS stallion will be presented with The Dancer Medal (named to honour the German-bred, International Dressage pony and SPSS Elite sire Dancer) and will also be invited to give a display at the 2007 Mare Grading on 13th October.

Active Stallions are those with progeny entered in the Futurity series that have been nominated and paid a nomination fee.  This creates a separate prize fund which is shared amongst the Active stallions that have the most successful progeny performance record across all age groups.  Each Active stallion must have at least three offspring enrolled in the Baileys Horse Feeds/British Breeding Futurity Young Horse Evaluations to be eligible and those Active stallions that do not reach this number of representatives will have their nomination fees returned at the end of the series.

A full list of all Active and Passive stallions is regularly updated on www.bef.co.uk and nomination forms are available for download at http://www.bef.co.uk/Downloads/Stallion%20Nomination%202007.pdf

Albion Domino

UPDATE FROM ALBION STUD

Ann Craig of Albion stud reports that her young mare Albion Elite, having had a foal in 2005, has started her ridden career and already been 4th and 3rd SJ, done her first XC where she merely had one stop at a triple uphill bounce of steps and came 3rd in her first Show Hunter pony - with a comment from the judge that she'd have won had she not had a double bridle on!!!  For a bit of fun, her dam, Amazon's Charme, been pony racing at Lingfield, but it will be her last race for a while as she's being put in foal to Aimbry Chester.

Albion Domino is now jumping with a very novice child on him as well as dressage and is back with Ann as he was outgrown by his young para rider. Ann has still got frozen semen from him; contact her on 07956 499054;  www.albionhorse.biz/stallion .

UPDATES FROM MEMBERS

The SPSS Graded mare, Coldblow Honeysuckle, with her young rider, Maddy Van Vleet made it to the Pony Of the Year Show at Unex Towerlands this April despite supposedly stopping jumping!  She did well, jumping 3 foot 6 in the final Grand Prix, but unfortunately luck was not their side and they were not in the final placing. However, ‘Honey’ was probably one of the smallest ponies there and just getting there is a notable achievement.

The SPSS Elite Graded mare Sapphire Blue, has had a lovely filly foal by Mill Law.  Having lost her 2006 foal during pregnancy, the safe arrival of this year’s foal has been a great relief for her owner.  Pictured on right and on Foals page.

Members are welcome to send news of their registered/graded ponies for publication on the website and/or newsletter –  (with SPSS in the title please)

SPSS Stallion takes part in Panto!!

SPSS Stallion, Thistledown Copper Lustre, had a starring role in his local pantomime "Cinderella" on the 19 & 20th Jan 2007.  Copper Lustre (known as Harry at home) performed in front of an audience of 200 people, which says a lot about his temperament!  He gave three performances without a dress rehearsal  although he did arrive early for his first performance in order to desensitise him to the children, theatre and lights, music etc.  His owner reports that he behaved like a proper gentleman and went on stage 3 times despite having been run into with the coach the first night as it was a nightmare to get in the building!

SPSS GRADING, YHE PONY FINAL AND IN-HAND SHOW REPORT

The 2006 Stallion and Mare Gradings were held at Heart of England Equestrian on the 21st and 22nd October.  Of the 7 stallions forward, 5 passed and have been accepted into the studbook.  The highest scoring stallion was the 4 year old Thoroughbred, Arnie de Burgh, who was racing successfully on the flat until a few weeks earlier and was viewed by the judges as a good stallion for producing event ponies.  The other successful stallions were Salvador AP, Acado, Rughavens Jackpot and Magic Gold GF.

All 13 of the mares who attended the Mare Grading were accepted into the SPSS studbook and the judges commented on the excellent standard of mares forward.  The highest scoring mare overall was the 2 year old Wurlitzer filly, Wurlibird.  Unfortunately, as her dam is of unknown breeding, Wurlibird goes into the Preliminary studbook.  The next highest scoring mare was the 12 year old, former Dutch Team Show Jumping pony, Oude Tempels Micky who was graded into the Head Studbook and also awarded Elite status in recognition of her outstanding competition career to date.

Alongside the Grading, the SPSS hosted the SEIB/British Breeding Young Horse Evaluation Pony Section Finals.  The Dressage pony, Conchita, was the overall winner of the SPSS sponsored Pony Section Finals.  Tynycae Sandmartin was the runner up and winner of the Central Prefix Register Prize and Machno Showtime was the winner of the Show Jumping pony section.  Click here to read more on the YHE Pony Final Results

To promote British Breeding, a discussion and demonstration by connections of the YHE finalists was held.  SPSS graded stallion Wurlitzer, the sire of Tynycae Sandmartin, and his daughter Wish of Sheepcote demonstrated advanced dressage movements and Meirion Jones of Machno Stud and Serena Pincus of Sheepcote Stud discussed Sports Pony breeding and answered questions from spectators.

In addition, an in-hand Premium show was run for the first time.  There were classes for broodmares, foals and youngstock and of the 12 ponies forward, 6 were awarded First Premiums and the remainder Second Premiums.  The Overall In-Hand Champion was Wurlibird (1st placed in the Female Youngstock class) and Reserve was DHI Tiger Lilly (1st placed in the Broodmare Class).  The other class winners were Littlebyrom Patchwork (Male Youngstock) and Pintofields Regal Impressario (Foal).  Click here to view Show Results

SPSS Graded Mare Successful with Young Rider

SPSS Graded mare, Coldblow Honeysuckle, has busily been competing this summer with her young owner, Maddy Van Vleet (age 13).  Maddy and Honey attended their first BSJA show and won both classes first time!  Honey qualified for the Elementary level Hickstead Dressage Masters doing a very good dressage test against big warmblood type horses.  After her owner’s bigger pony fell ill, Honey had to compete in the intermediate 1.05m show jumping team. She jumped every round wonderfully but unfortunately the team did not get placed. Honey and Maddy then competed in the Novice Area Teams ODE and after a good dressage and two clear rounds came individually second overall. Next Honey competed at the Under 21’s Dressage Championships in Lincolnshire having qualified for the Elementary Championships.  Honey was placed in every class, winning both her team novices and a qualifier for the Pony Derby. Overall Honey won £105 and a £25 voucher for lessons. She also received 4 plates and 9 rosettes.  Finally, Honey competed in her first Medium on the 1st of October. She was third in the affiliated show out of all the big warmbloods. She will be doing two more mediums until the national Talent spotting finals.  SPSS offers many congratulations to this versatile mare.
