2009 Dancer Medal Awarded to Bernwode Brokat

The 2009 SPSS Dancer Medal has been awarded to the SPSS Graded stallion Bernwode Brokat for excellence in breeding and, in particular, his progeny results in the 2009 BEF Futurity Series which ranked him as the 'Leading UK Sire of Sports Ponies'.

The SPSS instigated the Dancer Medal as a testimony to the achievements of the pony stallion Dancer, who was better known in this country as Broomford Dancer.  During his illustrious career he represented Germany, Holland and Great Britain at the European Pony Dressage Championships and he is also renowned as a sire of top performance ponies and stallions.

The medal  is an original piece of artwork commissioned by the SPSS from Belinda Sillars and is modelled on Dancer himself.  It is a discretionary award given to a worthy SPSS registered pony for achieving excellence in either competition or breeding.

Our 2009 winner, Bernwode Brokat, provided the lunchtime entertainment (in the form of dressage to music) at the recent SPSS Mare Grading day.  Brokat was ridden by European Junior Team rider, Sam Brown, who met him for the very first time on the morning of the display giving them no chance to form a relationship or practice their routine!  It was also the first time Brokat had been ridden for several months as he had been ‘on call’ to his mare owners, but he rose to the occasion and enjoyed showing off to his audience!

Brokat's owner, Sarah Steggall reports that she did have a moment of panic when she saw how much Sam had grown in a year but somehow Sam and Brokat managed to pull off a credible display albeit without stirrups!   What none of them knew at that time was that Brokat had also been selected to receive the 2009 Dancer Medal!  The medal was presented to Sarah by SPSS Chairman, Celia Clarke, at the end of the display and Sarah was surprised and delighted to receive it on Brokat's behalf.

Coincidently, earlier in the day, Bernwode Brokat’ s daughter Mademoiselle achieved the highest ever score awarded to a grading mare to be the 2009 Mare Champion – further confirmation of Brokat’s excellence as a sire.

IMPORTANT NOTICE about 2009 Foal Registrations

Please note that DEFRA have mandated that additional information is included on the ID page of all passports from 1 July 09.  Hence, it is important that for all foals registered after 1 July 09, the ID section of NEW version of the Youngstock Registration Form is completed by a vet rather than the back of the covering certificate as that ID section is now out of date.  The latest version of the Youngstock Registration Form has Sep 09 in top right corner (click here to download).   Please call Head Office (contact details at top of page) if you have any queries.

So to summarise:  All foal registrations after 1st July 09 require a completed Youngstock Registration form (Sep 09 version) with the ID page completed by a Vet.

2009 Foal Reports - Pictures start to arrive!

Penny Walster of Bathley Hill Farm has again sent in the first foal report of the year!!  This time, she was reporting on behalf of Mandy Jones and family, whose mare Rohey Sparkling Maydream had a lovely chestnut filly by Penny's SPSS graded stallion Thistledown Copper Lustre on 10th May.  The Jones' have named the foal Maybeck Sparkling Moonlight but there are rumours that the Jones children are calling her "Bambi" :-)

If anyone else has had or is awaiting a foal by a SPSS graded stallion or graded mare, then please send us a picture for the foals page - here.  There is a link on the page to email in pictures – but please note that you must have the permission from the photographer for any pictures sent for the website.  Please also include the foals name, colour, sex, parents names and date of birth :-)

News of Rughavens Jackpot

Claire Knowles of Jackpots Stud has reported that their SPSS licensed stallion, Rughavens Jackpot (known as JJ), has had a very successful start to this season.  He has qualified for the British Dressage Elementary Open Regional Championships, is half qualified for the Medium Open Regional Championships (having won the only medium he has started in this season) and is fully qualified for the Advanced Medium Restricted Regional Championships, winning the only advanced medium he has attempted this season and only his 2nd attempt at that level.  He also won that class overall, beating the other open horses.

JJ is also attending BYRDS events with a 13 year old rider and together they are campaigning for a place on the Inter Regional Team squad.  We wish them every success for the rest of the season and the Regional Championships.

News of Bernwode Nirvana

SPSS licensed stallion, Bernwode Nirvana was selected to represent GB at the International Show at Addington on the 16/17/18 April and performed creditably for his first big occasion.  In the Pony Team test he was out of the main placings  due to a strong European attendance, but was the 4th highest scoring British Pony.  On the final day, he was 6th in the Consolation Class.  As a result, Nirvana and rider Fiona Wood were selected for the French International at Saumur at the end of April, where after a nervous start in the Team Test, they performed well in the Individual Test to be the second highest scoring of the British Ponies.  Nirvana is not standing at stud this year in order to focus on competitions and it's nice to see this strategy is paying off!

PSHP Stallion Parades

The Lead Body for British Performance Sport Horses and Ponies (PSHP) has organised 3 Stallion Parades for early 2009.  The first of these took place on Valentines Day (how appropriate!!) at Hartpuy College.  Hartpury's resident SPSS graded pony stallion, Bernwode Benedict, was the only pony to take part as unfortunately the other two entered (Ducal Flash Dance and Fourwinds Gethin) were unable to attend as their lorry had a brake problem soon after departing from their home.  Benedict did the SPSS proud though as, despite not having been backed very long, he rose to the occasion and showed himself off nicely.

The remaining PSHP Stallion Displays are:

14 March - Arena UK - tickets £5 on the door.

12 April - Myerscough College - tickets £5

A list of entries for each display will be posted on the BEF website once they have closed. See entry details on BEF website if you have a stallion you would like to take.

SPSS Award for the Top Sire of Performance Ponies

At the 2009 British Breeding Dinner, SPSS Treasurer Edith Rutherford presented the SPSS Award for the Top Sire of Performance Ponies to Machno Carwyn, a 16 year old bay stallion sired by Carregcoch Bleddyn out of Machno Ceridwen by Tylan Danny.  Owned by Mrs Yvonne Schoch, Machno Carwyn was ridden by the family Schoch’s children Faye and Jordan and bred in Wales by Meirion Jones who collected the award.

Machno Carwyn is quite simply the best show jumping pony stallion in Europe, possibly in the world!  Since the beginning of his career in 1997, Carwyn has been placed more than 220 times in official competitions; approximately 140 times internationally and 50 times at grand prix – winning no less than 7.

He is the only pony stallion ever to have won a gold medal at the European Show Jumping Championships, and he has done this twice!  He has also won the Swiss National Championships 4 times and has numerous highly successful progeny.  His sire, Carregcoch Bleddyn, is Elite graded by the SPSS and has top performing progeny in all three disciplines.

2008 Dancer Medal Presented at British Breeding Dinner

The 2008 SPSS Dancer Medal was awarded to the Elite SPSS Graded mare Catherston Nutsafe for her outstanding competition record and, in particular, her performance at the 2008 Pony European Championships.

It is a discretionary award given to a worthy SPSS registered pony.

Our 2008 winner has an outstanding competition record.  In 2007 she was individual and team winner in Eventing at the Pony Club Open Championships, and previous to that had the won HOYS 15hh working Hunter Championship. In 2008, she represented Great Britain at the FEI Pony Eventing Championships, helping the team to a silver medal and taking 6th place overall.  This Championship is the ultimate level of competition available to a pony and the result testified the superb quality of this British bred pony.

Catherston Nutsafe (by Catherston Nightsafe out of Catherston Dauntless) also had a foal (by embryo transfer) in 2008.  This foal went on to be the Futurity Pony Foal Champion recording an elite score of 9.0 and winning her dam a broodmare diploma.

Foal Cundlegreen Charlemagne won a First Premium and 2 year old Cundlegreen Birthday Girl was awarded an Elite Premium for gaining a fantastic score of 9.16 (out of 10) in the 2 year old Eventer class.  With 6 of the 9 dates having occurred, Birthday Girl (pictured on the right) is the highest scoring two year old overall - and the only 2 year old so far to be awarded an Elite Premium!  Cundlegreen Stud are thrilled with the results and hopeful that this will qualify her for the Elite Championship Show at Addington on the 31 August. The photo on the left is of Maddy and Honeysuckle at their first show.

Dancer Medal Presented

In 2007, the SPSS initiated a special award for the highest placed SPSS licensed/graded stallion on the Baileys Horse Feeds / British Breeding Futurity Young Horse Evaluations Active stallion list.  The Dancer Medal (named to honour the German-bred, International Dressage pony and SPSS Elite sire Dancer) was presented to Gorsfraith Brenin

To qualify, the stallion had to have at least three offspring enrolled in the Baileys Horse Feeds/British Breeding Futurity Young Horse Evaluations and to pay a nomination fee.  The score was calculated by taking the average of the stallion's best 3 progeny scores.

There were only 2 SPSS pony sires eligible (out of a total of 11 Active Stallions) and Gorsfratih Brenin scored an impressive average progeny mark of 8.45 (from 5 progeny entered) to place 4th overall.  Bernwode Brokat was very close behind with a score of 8.42 (from 3 progeny) and he placed 5th overall.
