2014 SPSS AGM Announcement & British Stallion Event

SPSS members are invited to attend the 2014 AGM.  It is being held on Saturday 3rd January 2015 at 10.30am in a classroom at the Hartpury Arena (Hartpury College, near Gloucester GL19 3BE).  The room will be open from 10am and we plan to have hot drinks and cake for attendees.  Entrance to the Hartpury Arena classrooms is from the lower of the 2 main entrances and we will put a notice on the door to say which room we are using.

We have chosen to hold the 2014 AGM at the same location as the British Bred Sport Horse Stallion Event in the hope that more members will attend as we are seeking your input into future events and initiatives.  The stallions are due to start parading at noon and all current SPSS members (as at 31st December 2014) attending the AGM will get free entry to the Stallion Parade (family members will get one ticket per membership). Stallion Parade tickets are available on the door; more information is available here and the SPSS will have a display stand at the event so please come and chat does us even if you're not able to attend the AGM.

Please  before Wednesday 31st December if you plan to attend.

The Agenda can be downloaded here

Passport Reminder - British Passports for British Sports Ponies!

Don't forget that by law you must apply for a passport for your foals before the later of 6 months of age or the end of the year of their birth - so for any foals born before 1st July you need to get the application in by 31st December!

The SPSS will issue a passport to the progeny of our graded mares and/or stallions - provided the foal is not a pure-bred British Native pony as these must get a passport from their Breed Society, even if both parents are SPSS graded.

As well as being able to download the application form, the Passports page also contains guidance about how to get a passport for your foal, so please read before submitting a passport application as it will help the SPSS Studbook Office process your passport quickly and mean that you won't have to get your vet out again to complete missing paperwork/DNA/ID/microchipchip.

In particular, if you want to name your foal with any more than a single word, to avoid disappointment, please check that the first word you use isn't someone's registered prefix as if it is you wont be able to use it (and some very common words like "My" are registered prefixes!).  Prefixes can be checked on www.centralprefixregister.com and can be applied for through the SPSS.  Click here to download the application form or please contact the Studbook Office (details at top of page) to receive the form by post or email.

Please contact the Studbook Office (details at the top of the page) if you have any questions and we'll do our best to assist.

New ELITE Graded Mare - Daylight MW

One of the successful mares at the recent grading was the former FEI dressage pony, Daylight MW (Dornick B x Magister x High Count).  Now owned by Kirsty Millard of KMD Stud, Daylight's previous owner & rider, Harriette Williams, was also there to share the glory as Kirsty had persuaded her to come and lead Daylight in front of the judges.

Daylight was Vice Bundeschampion in 2005 as a 4 year old then came to the UK where she was ridden initially by Claire Gallimore then by Harriette with whom she represented GB at the 2012 Addington International competition before retiring to stud with Kirsty.  This achievement means that as well as being accepted into the SPSS Head Studbook, Daylight has joined the select group of SPSS Elite mares as this accolade is only awarded to mares who have either represented their country at FEI competition or are the dam of an International competitor.

Daylight's talent for dressage is no doubt inherited from her sire, Dornick B, who was unbeatable as a young pony, winning the Bundeschampionships 4 times in a row, as well as being one of the successful ponies ever at the FEI Pony European Championships where he won Individual Gold an impressive four times (2000, 2001, 2004 & 2007), Silver in 2006, Bronze in 2002 as well as Team Gold medals in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.  His many other successful offspring include multi team & individual medal winners Danilo and Deinhard B.

As Daylight is also the dam of an Elite Premium filly, KMD Dornlight (by SPSS Elite graded stallion, Rembrandt DDH), the SPSS Studbook Manager, Lucy Sheldrake, decided that this double achievement should be marked by the award of a SPSS Merit Award & Sash. Daylight MW is pictured with the Grading Judges (from left Teri England, Hans-Heinrich Bruening & Geoff Glazzard), her last rider Harriette Williams (holding her), her current owner, Kirsty Millard and her filly, KMD Dornlight.

2014 SPSS Stallion & Mare Gradings - Results

The SPSS 2015 Mare & Stallion Gradings took place on the 10th & 11th October at The College EC, Keysoe. Both mares & Stallions were judged by our regular experts, Hans Heinrich Bruening & Geoff Glazzard, with the assistance of Teri England and Jacke Mathieson.

Five of the 15 stallions forward passed the assessment and they have all been awarded a 3 year license during which time their performance and progeny will be monitored.  The Champion was the 2 year old, WPCS Section D, Taraco Fabrizio (Danaway Flash Jack x Tireinon Triple Crown).  Bred by Miss T J Coppins and owned by Claire Wyatt, Fabrizio scored 81.15% and when commenting afterwards, Hans-Heinrich Bruening said "when you look at this pony he makes you smile".

All 8 mares forward graded into one of the SPSS Studbooks depending on grading score, performance record and completeness of pedigree.  The Mare Champion with the impressive score of 82.31% was the 5 year old British bred Ella (Caesar 171 x Santano) who was presented by Kelly Oxtoby for her owner/breeder, Julie Lockley of Bramley Stud.

SPSS Pony Wins National Dressage Title

The SPSS is delighted that the 5 year old SPSS passported dressage pony Cruz (Caesar 171 x Don Larino) ridden by top British pony rider, Phoebe Peters has won the 2014 British Dressage (BD) Novice Open National Champion title.

In 2013, Cruz was the SPSS Young Dressage Pony Champion, ridden by Jayne Turney.  Bred by Rachel Silk, Cruz was bought by Olympic Gold medal winning dressage rider, Charlotte Dujardin, who sent him to her friend Jayne for backing just before Christmas 2012.  Jayne brought Cruz on slowly in 2013 and the Young Dressage Pony Championships was only his third competition and first time indoors.  In March this year, Jayne qualified Cruz (who competes as Cruz III) for the BD Regional Championships at Novice Open level before passing the ride to Phoebe, who then won the Addington Manor Regionals and qualified for the National Championships

Cruz's sire, SPSS Elite graded Caesar 171 (Condor x Askan), also sired the 2012 Young Dressage Pony Reserve Champion, LE Chiffre (x Donnerwetter) who has competed internationally for GB for the last 2 years and, at only 7 years of age, was named as Reserve for the 2014 Pony European Championships team.  Caesar is himself a former international dressage pony, ridden by Victoria Molloy, he was a member of the GB Dressage Pony Teams that won Silver at the European Championships 2000 and Bronze in 2002.

Our congratulations to Cruz's breeder, owner and riders - an outstanding result against tough competition and showing such promise for the future.

The mare grading will take place on the Friday from approximately 10am, judged by our regular experts, Hans Heinrich Bruening & Geoff Glazzard then the stallions will be presented the next morning. Pony European Championships

The SPSS are once again going to be reporting live from the annual FEI European Pony Championships which are taking place from Wednesday, July 30th to Sunday, August 3rd 2014 at the Green Glens Arena, Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland.  The Championships consists of the FEI European Pony Dressage, Eventing and Jumping Championships and GB sends teams to compete in each of the disciplines.

We'll post the reports on our dedicated 2014 Pony Euros page and announce updates on our Facebook page.  As we have effectively relocated the SPSS office to Ireland for the week, please bear with us if it takes a little while longer to answer the phone or reply to emails - but do still contact us as we're always delighted to hear form members and potential members wherever we happen to be operating the office from!

As well as the British teams we will be cheering on all Britsh-bred ponies.  Representing GB there are SPSS Elite graded British-bred mare Catherston Nutsafe (Catherston Nightsafe x Dutch Courage) on the Eventing team and the British-breds Aroldo (Verdi x unknown) and Ammanvalley Santino (Cruglwyd Sant x unknown) on the Jumping team.  2013 Individual Gold medal winning showjumper Rock DJ will be defending his title with his Irish rider, Susan Fitzpatrick.  Then for Italy, eventer Soulbury Otters Star (Soulbury Otters Isle x Golden Ra) and his rider Maria Manfredi Foschi will be looking to improve on their 2013 result of 26th.

SPSS Graded Mare Wins Final Eventing Trial

The SPSS are delighted that the experienced, 18 year old British-bred and SPSS Elite graded mare, Catherston Nutsafe won the final eventing pony trial (for long listed combinations only) at Barbury International on 4th July.  Ridden by Chelsea Pearce, this combination, who represented GB as individuals at the 2013 Pony Europeans in Italy, are strong contenders for the 2014 Team as they finished on their dressage score of 28.5.

Nutsafe was bred by Lizzie Murray and won Eventing Team Silver in 2008 & 2009 (ridden by Ella McEwen) and Team Gold in 2010 (ridden by Sam Ecroyd). Nutsafe was awarded the 2008 SPSS Dancer Medal and then the prestigious Pony Performance & Breeding Award in January 2014.

Pony Euros - Dressage Team Selection

British Dressage announced their team for the Pony European Championships on the 10th June and the SPSS are delighted that the 7 year old SPSS bred & graded stallion, LE Chiffre was selected as one of the reserves.  Bred by Bev and Sam Brown and still owned by them, LE Chiffre (known as "Peanut") has only been with his 13 year old rider, Lara Kuropatwa since the end of 2013 and they have had a fantastic season so far.  At only their second international show abroad, Compiegne CDI at the end of May, they were 4th in the Pony Team test with an excellent score of 72.949% - which was also the score of the far more experienced 3rd place combination of Beth Horobin & Gigolo and less than 0.2% behind the 2nd placed Dutch riders.  LE Chiffre and Lara are pictured in the prize giving at the Addington CDI earlier in the year.

SPSS Pony Wins NPS Supreme Dressage Championship

The 7th annual NPS Supreme Dressage Championship Final took place on the 13th April at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre.  The culmination of around 150 qualifiers, this event attracted competitors of all ages from Cornwall to Scotland.

Competitors qualified in sections split by either the age of the rider or the breed of the pony, with classes at Preliminary and Novice level for British Riding Ponies, small Mountain & Moorlands (not exceeding 138cm), large Mountain & moorlands (exceeding 138cm), part-bred horses & ponies (as well as part bred Natives, this also included Part bred Arabs & Sports Ponies).  There were also classes for Mini (under 12 on 1st Jan 2013) and Junior (under 18 on 1st Jan 2013) riders.

Due to the high number of entrants at the final, some classes were further split by breed resulting in a total of 16 classes. There was also a team competition, where qualified riders made up teams of 4 generally representing either their region or breed.  At Prelim level, the team competition was won by the "Cornish Hotshots" who are organised by SPSS Committee member Jane Hoskins and they were also second at Novice level behind the "4 Faithful Hairy Friends".

To the SPSS's delight, the winner of the Junior Prelim class was Charlotte Dicker on SPSS passported Catherston Bit of Gold (Littledale Bright Star x  Catherston Gold Eagle).  Another of SPSS graded Littledale Bright Star's sons, Catherston Bright Spark was also 6th in this class.

In the Part-bred Prelim class, the SPSS registered Welsh Part-bred, Portmead New Horizon ridden by Charlotte Chard was called in as the winner.  Interestingly, in both cases the ponies and riders are home bred with Charlotte Chard's mother Kate Odey being the breeder of her pony, who is known at home as "Scrumpy" and Charlotte Dicker is Jennie Loriston-Clarke's grand-daughter and Jennie, who is synonymous with the Catherston prefix, bred Bit of Gold.

The winner of each class qualified for the Supreme Championship "Ride Off" where they had up to 4.5 minutes to perform a freestyle test to music of their choice.  Some competitors had obviously put much thought into their choice of music, including Charlotte Chard who rode Scrumpy to fun music by The Wurzels befitting of their West Country roots to eventually finish 8th.

With 16 competitors representing most of the British pony breeds, it was a fascinating final and two of the youngest competitors, Katie Wrennall on the Welsh Sec A Waitwith Choice (Friars Osbek x Flashley Idwel) and Holly Kerslake on the British Riding Pony Millcroft Osiris finished First Reserve and 4th respectively.

Reserve Supreme went to the lovely Highland, Glenbanchor Somerled (Moss-side Iain Mor x Glen Aigas) & Jo Jack whose smooth performance to Scottish themed music had obviously met with the judge's approval.

Then it was lovely to see Catherston Bit of Gold and Charlotte Dicker perform a complex floor pattern to music including The Floral Dance and become the 2014 Supreme Champions.  As a foal, Catherston Bit if Gold was the highest scoring pony at the BEF Futurity Evaluations gaining an impressive 9.36 and he and Charlotte have also done well at British Dressage.

First 2014 Foal Report

Kirsty Millard of KMD Stud has sent in the first foal report of the year.  The red dun filly who has been named KMD Dornlight and is known as "Dee Dee", was born on the 11 April.  Dee Dee is bred "in the purple" for dressage being by the Pony European Team Gold & Silver medal winner, SPSS Elite graded stallion, Rembrandt DDH out of the German State Premium graded mare, Daylight MW (Dornick B x Magister).  Daylight was Vice Bundeschampion in 2005 as a 4 year old then came to the UK where she was ridden initially by Claire Gallimore then by Harriette Williams with whom she represented GB at the 2012 Addington International competition before retiring to stud with Kirsty.  Daylight's sire Dornik B was unbeatable as a young pony, winning the Bundeschampionships 4 times in a row, as well as being one of the successful ponies ever at the FEI Pony European Championships where he won Individual Gold an impressive four times (2000, 2001, 2004 & 2007), Silver in 2006, Bronze in 2002 as well as Team Gold medals in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.  His many successful offspring include multi team & individual medal winners Danilo and Deinhard B.

If anyone else has had or is awaiting a foal by a SPSS graded stallion or graded mare, then please send us a picture for the foals page - here.  There is a link on the page to email in pictures – but please note that you must have the permission from the photographer for any pictures sent for the website (and tell us that you have in your email).  Please also include the foals name, colour, sex, parents names/breeding, date of birth and breeder.

SPSS Studbook Office Relocation

Since before the formal creation of the SPSS in 2000, Founder Director and Studbook Manager, Sarah Steggall has shouldered the bulk of the day to day work of administering the studbook, albeit with the support of her fellow Founder Director, SPSS Chairman Celia Clarke, and the other Directors and Committee members.

Last September, Sarah said that she'd like to step back from her pivotal role and as part of this it was agreed by the Committee (and announced at the 2013 AGM) that the Studbook Office would relocate to be run by Philippa Cole in Bedfordshire.

Philippa has been the SPSS Webmaster since 2003, ran the Office while Sarah moved house in 2005 and regularly assists with running the annual Stallion & Mare Grading, so already has extensive experience of the SPSS administration.

The official move date was 1st April and the new office is now fully operational.  As you can see at the top of this page, the website (including all the downloadable forms) now shows the new office address and contact details.

If possible, all post should now be sent to the new address (The Last House, Keysoe Row West, Keysoe, Bedfordshire MK44 2JJ) but post sent to Sock Farm will obviously be forwarded.

We have produced printed labels showing our new address that can be stuck to back of SPSS passports (see picture on right).  Anyone wanting to a label for their pony's SPSS passport should send a SAE to the Studbook Office with a note saying how many stickers are required.

News of SPSS Passported Pony Centrepoint

We recently received news of one of the first ponies to have a SPSS Identity Passport, back in 2003, when the law requiring all equines to have a passport first came into force.  Then aged 9 and of unknown breeding, Centrepoint had started his career Show Jumping, winning a total of £58 in BSJA classes before his rider, Laura Goodridge, started competing him in Britsh Dressage (BD) classes.

By 2004, Centrepoint (competing as Centre Point) & Laura were winning at Medium level and contesting FEI Pony classes.  In 2005, Emma Hester took over the ride and they were 2nd at the Patchetts Area Festival that year. They then competed at a Winter Regional Championships the next year before being placed 6th at one of the 2006 Medium level Summer Regional Championships.

Centrepoint continued to do well at Elementary & Medium levels with his subsequent riders, gaining a career total of 193 points, and last competed with BD in 2012 when he was 18.

Now aged 20, Centrepoint was recently bought from a dealer by Marie Bennett who is looking forward to hacking him out and plans to take him to a Le Trec camp in the summer.  He's pictured on the left just after arriving at her yard and having thoroughly enjoyed a roll in the dirt!

We are delighted that this versatile pony now has a home for life with Marie and we wish them many happy hacks together.

We always love to hear about SPSS passported/registered ponies - updates can be sent to the email address at the top of the page at any time.

Northern Stallion Showcase

The Northern Stallion Showcase is being held on March 22nd at Park End Equestrian, Hexham, Northumberland NE48 3PN.  It is scheduled to start at 10:15am and finishes at 5pm when the Prize Draw Winners will be announced.

The SPSS Graded Stallions attending are (with provisional times):

12:00 Holmegards Bastian
12:55 Danger 36 (Elite)
13:30 Caesar 171 (Elite)

Park End is situated on the B6320 approx 5miles north of the (Humshaugh) roundabout (junction with the B6318 (Roman Road)). The stables are off on the right hand side and the centre is opposite on the left hand side of the road.

The event is being run in association with Baileys Horse Feeds and their Marketing Manager, Jane Buchan said: "Supporting the inaugural Northern Stallion Showcase comes naturally to Baileys Horse Feeds, as the company has sponsored and had a hands-on involvement with the BEF Futurity Young Horse Evaluations since their inception. Events like this are invaluable to mare owners planning their coverings for the following season, giving them a unique opportunity to view so many stallions 'in the flesh' in one day.

SPSS Stallions Shine at Under 25s Dressage Show

Three SPSS graded stallions competed at the British Dressage Under 25s Show at Keysoe, Bedfordshire on the 1st & 2nd February.  SOS Kantje's Unicolor was ridden by Poppy Padley and they won both the C Squad Rider Test and the Elementary Qualifier on the Saturday and then placed 4th in the Elementary on the Sunday.  Poppy, who is 13, has been riding "Nippy" for just over a year and they won the Elementary Restricted Pet Plan Area Festival class at Wellington Riding last September and thus qualified for the Area Festival Final at the British Dressage Winter Championships in April this year.

The youngest of the SPSS stallions competing at Keysoe was the first SPSS bred pony to compete for GB, 7 year old Elite graded LE Chiffre, ridden by Lara Kuropatwa (who has only been riding him for a few months) and they did well finishing 7th in the very competitive FEI Pony Team Test.

Finally, Elite graded Bernwode Brokat, who was Team Reserve in 2013 with Ruth Hole and is now ridden by her 12 year old sister, Claire (who has only been riding him for a few months), finished in 6th place in a very competitive FEI Pony Team test.  Indeed, all the riders ahead of Brokat & Claire, who has only been riding him for a few months,  having been selected for the 2013 Pony European Championships Team.

Prestigious Pony Performance & Breeding Award For Catherston Nutsafe

At the 2014 Breeders Dinner & Awards Ceremony (organised by the British Horse Foundation), the SPSS sponsored Pony Performance & Breeding Award was presented to SPSS Elite graded mare Catherston Nutsafe (Catherston Nightsafe x Dutch Courage).   The award was accepted on Nutsafe's behalf by her breeder, Lizzie Murray.

Nutsafe won Eventing Team Silver in 2008 & 2009 (ridden by Ella McEwen) and Team Gold in 2010 (ridden by Sam Ecroyd). Then in 2013, aged 17 and ridden by Chelsea Pearce (pictured), Nutsafe represented GB again as an Individual and belied her years, completing the XC clear within the time despite the relentless sun and very high temperature to finish 15th.

SPSS Elite graded Nutsafe was awarded the 2008 SPSS Dancer Medal and has had 2 foals, the first (by Nurejew) is winning at dressage and the second (by Dunlewley Rigmarole) was 2008 Futurity Pony Foal Champion.

Clean Sweep for SPSS Members at Awards Dinner

At the 2014 British Breeders Awards Dinner SPSS members monopolised the sports pony awards.  Certificates and rosettes are always presented to the breeder of the top scoring foal, yearling, two and three year old ponies over all the previous year's Futurity Evaluations.  For 2013 these went to:

  • Kirsty Louise Millard's KMD Rialto (Rembrandt DDH x Laithehill Gondolier) was top sports pony foal gaining an Elite premium (Eventing).

  • Anne Collins' Sans Doute (Jimmerdor de Florys x FS Don't Worry) was top sports pony yearling with a High First premium (Eventing)

  • Lynne Crowden's Woodlander Wales (Woodlander Wavavoom x Talon Teifion) was top 2 year old with an Elite premium (Dressage).  Wales' score of 9.30 made him the top scoring Sports Pony overall but also the 3rd highest scoring 2 year old overall entrants (a total of 107 horses & ponies)

  • Jo Wright's RS Socrates (Sarkozy x Rudgeway Charming Prince) was top 3 year old gaining a High First Premium (Dressage).  Socrates has been presented each year for evaluation, gaining a first premium as a foal, finishing  2011 as the equal top scoring yearling and then being top scoring 2 year old in 2012 (in both 2011 & 2012 he also got High First Premiums).

Our congratulations to all mentioned above and also to the other high scoring SPSS breeder's ponies including the other Elite winners:

  • Jo Wright's RS Charmion de Luxe (Champion De Luxe x FS Don't Worry (Dressage)

Both RS Charmain de Luxe and Sans Doute are out of the German Riding Pony mare Hilkens My Love (FS Don't Worry x Arts Dancer Boy) and she was the sports pony dam with the highest average score (8.98) and at least 2 progeny in 2013.

Performance Test Success for Wadacre's Wee Pocket Rocket

Jeannette Matthews-Griffiths' British-bred and SPSS graded stallion Wadacre's Wee Pocket Rocket (Waikiki of Wadacre x Hurstead Spruce) recently completed the 30 day Performance Test for small horses in Germany, finishing 3rd overall.

Holding a WBS-UK passport, Pocket Rocket went out to Germany for his initial grading, passing the Hannover Pony Verband licensing at Adelheidsdorf in February 2012. While in Germany, Pocket Rocket has sired Premium winning foals and he is returning to Wadacre Stud's base in the UK for the 2014 stud season.

2013 Dancer Medal awarded to LE Chiffre

The 2013 SPSS Dancer Medal has been awarded to the SPSS Graded dressage pony stallion LE Chiffre (Caesar 171 x Donnerwetter) in recognition of him being the first SPSS passported pony to compete Internationally when he and Chloe Vell competed for GB at the Hickstead CDI in August. As LE Chiffre is a SPSS graded stallion, this achievement has also earned him the Elite accolade.

The SPSS instigated the Dancer Medal in 2007 as testimony to the achievements of the pony stallion Dancer, better known in the UK as Broomford Dancer. During Dancer’s illustrious career he represented Holland and Great Britain at the European Pony Dressage Championships and is also a renowned sire of some of Europe’s top pony stallions and performance ponies.

The Medal is an original piece of artwork commissioned by the SPSS from Belinda Sillars and is modelled on Dancer himself. It is a discretionary award given annually to a worthy SPSS registered pony that has achieved excellence in either competition or breeding.

LE Chiffre was bred by Bev & Sam Brown who still own him and he is by Sam's former international dressage pony, the SPSS Elite graded, Caesar 171, who stands with LE Chiffre at Sam's Godrics Stud near  Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne & Wear.  LE Chiffre's dam, Tiger Lily has several notable ponies in her pedigree, including the highly acclaimed sire Dancer (known in the UK as Broomford Dancer and another SPSS Elite sire) and the renown German State Premium mare, Kaprice.

The 2007 British Breeding Best British-bred Pony Foal, LE Chiffre was backed and brought on by his owner/co-breeder (Sam Brown) and his first test rider (Becky Moody).  As a 5 year old, LE Chiffre had a great first year in affiliated dressage.  He was one of just two 5 year olds to qualify for and compete at Elementary Open level at the National Championships - and the only pony in the class.  LE Chiffre then competed at the 2012 SPSS Open Young Dressage Pony Championships where he was the Top 5 Year Old & Reserve Champion overall.

LE Chiffre went to pony rider Chloe Vell in 2013 to start at FEI Pony level and after competing at the Keysoe and Addington Manor Premier League Shows, they were selected for the Hickstead CDI at the beginning of August. Just 6 weeks after his 6th birthday, LE Chiffre did well and finished in the top 6 in the FEI Pony Team & Music tests and 3rd in the Individual test.
