REGISTRATION

If you require a SPSS passport, please click here to jump to the Passports page.

SPSS will issue passports to the offspring of any SPSS graded pony regardless of expected adult height apart from pure-bred offspring eligible for the stud books of one of the indigenous Mountain and Moorland breeds of the UK.

Youngstock, mares and stallions with passports from another organisation can apply for SPSS Registration and passport overstamping provided that they are expected to mature below the maximum height limit of 158 cms (15.2hh).

ALL stallions and mares already graded into a recognised European or American sports pony or warmblood pony stud book are automatically eligible for entry into the SPSS studbook (provided that they do not exceed 158cms).

All stallions and mares with pedigree papers from all other recognised studbooks (both British and foreign) that are within the height limits and successfully attend a SPSS grading will also enter the SPSS studbook.

Pure-bred offspring of SPSS Graded stallions and mares that are eligible for the stud books of one of the indigenous Mountain and Moorland breeds of the UK must obtain a passport from that stud book.  They can then apply for SPSS Registration and passport overstamping and, provided that they do not exceed the height limits above, they may attend grading in due course. If graded they will enter the SPSS studbook as approved breeding stallions and mares in their own right.

Stallions and mares (of 158cm or less) and with missing or incomplete pedigrees that successfully attend a SPSS grading MAY be eligible for entry into the Preliminary (mares) or Foundation (stallions) studbooks - please contact the SPSS Studbook Office for more details.  Stallions with incomplete pedigrees are generally expected to have a proven competition record before entering for Grading.

Daphne - as a European graded mare, Daphne was automatically eligible for direct entry to the SPSS Studbook.

Overstamping for CED

Carregcoch Bleddyn - Welsh Section D and SPSS Elite Stallion

Registration of ponies with existing pedigree papers/passports from other stud books

Over-stamping and recording of pedigree is available to the following ponies:

*  Pure-bred animals with papers issued by a DEFRA-recognised stud book except for those of current Rare Breed status

*  Part-bred animals with papers issued by a DEFRA-recognised stud book

*  Pure and part-bred animals with papers issued by a recognised foreign pony stud book

Over-stamping / recording of pedigree is an initial step in the grading process and such over-stamped or recorded ponies must successfully attend a SPSS grading in order to gain the status of a graded sports pony for breeding purposes.

SPSS will also overstamp the passports of non-UK passported ponies & small horses that need to be put onto the UK Central Equine Register (CED) - find out more here - Overstamping for CED

Important Note

In accordance with DEFRA and EU rules on endemic breeds:

* SPSS pedigree papers/passport will not be issued to any animal eligible for registration as a pure-bred pony with any DEFRA-recognised Mountain and Moorland (native pony breed) studbook. However, these ponies may be registered with SPSS and have their original papers/passport over-stamped or documented accordingly provided they meet the criteria above

* Pure-bred ponies of Mountain and Moorland breeds as defined above must be registered with and receive papers/passport documents from their native pony stud book even if both parents are graded with the SPSS

Special Offer for ponies with passports from another EU country

As it is believed that DEFRA will be mandating that all Equine Passports from other EU countries have to be overstamped by an appropriate UK studbook and appreciating that some members may have multiple ponies with these passports, the SPSS now offers members a discount on the overstamping of multiple mares, geldings and youngstock for which they are the recorded owner) into the SPSS database.  Note that this will also apply to anyone wishing to overstamp multiple ponies with UK passports too.

Eligible non-UK EU passports (eg a German or Dutch ones) are those for any pony (or small horse up to 158cm) that is eligible for SPSS overstamping apart from any pure-bred ponies that have a UK-based mother studbook (eg Welsh Sec A, B, C, D or Caspian). Examples of pony breeds that we will overstamp for the purpose of change of ownership etc include Deutsches Reitponies (DRP), NWPCS Sec K, NRPS, Danish Sports Ponies and similar. The SPSS then notifies the passport issuer of any subsequent changes of ownership. Note that this overstamping does not put a graded pony into the appropriate SPSS Studbook – please contact us if that is required as well as the change of ownership.

To take advantage of this offer, please become an SPSS member then can submit the ponies' passports (along with the relevant SPSS Registration & Membership Forms and Membership Fee) to the SPSS Studbook Office for overstamping into the appropriate SPSS Registration section. Please allow 15 working days for this and we recommend that passports are sent by recorded delivery.

Special Offer prices:

2-5 ponies - £20 each

6 or more ponies - £15 each
