In September 2015, the SPSS undertook the first ever Mare Grading & Youngstock Evaluation Tour covering 3 countries, 6 regions and 7 venues. During the tour 50 mares were graded into the SPSS Studbook and 64 foals to 3 year olds were evaluated with 7 being awarded a prestigious Gold Premium and 54 a standard Premium. The SPSS Studbook Manager, Lucy Sheldrake, and the rest of the team are delighted with the success of this new initiative and are already looking at possible venues for next year. We welcome any suggestions and indications of likely support for something in a specific area and can be contacted on the office number/email at top of page) or via the SPSS Facebook page.
In addition, a 7th Regional event was held alongside the central Stallion Grading on the 16th & 17th October. At this event a further 12 mares graded into the SPSS Studbook, 10 stallions were accepted (and will be licensed once they have competed the post grading requirements) and 15 more youngstock were evaluated, with one gaining a Gold Premium and the rest a standard Premium.
The Champion Stallion was Barbara Bagshaw's proven Irish-bred Connemara, Ardbear Spirit (Coosheen Thyme x Village Boy) who impressed the judges at all stages of the grading and was described by them as a "super sport pony, proven in competition and as a sire". Reserve Champion was Kristina Floyd-Walker's British-bred Zumanji Decor (Zospecial x Davignon) who the judges viewed as an "athletic stallion with good gaits and an uphill tendency under saddle".
After all of the mare gradings were complete, the 2015 SPSS Supreme Champion Mare was announced as the South Scotland Champion, Shannon Stewarts' Mystique (SSH, Argentino x Voyage) who was bred by Debbie Bridges and scored an impressive 84.17%. The Reserve Supreme Champion was Sarah Rook's homebred Stambrook Miss D'Mena (WPCS PB, FS Don't Worry x Tsing Lite) who scored 83.33% and was the Central England Champion.
There is more about each of the successful stallions plus reports on each Regional Mare Gradings followed by the full results with information about each pony's breeding below. More information about the Regional Youngstock Evaluations and the National Youngstock Final is on this page.

The ten stallions below passed assessment at the Stallion Grading on 17th October 2015 and were either permanently graded (if they had proven performance and progeny) or were awarded a license for an initial period of 3 years, thus giving them time to prove themselves in both competition and as a sire. Licensed stallions have their performance and/or progeny monitored by the SPSS. Thirteen stallions were presented on the day and the grading judges were Herr Hans-Heinrich Brüning, Mr Geoff Glazzard and Mrs Jacke Mathieson. |

Next in the line up was Kristina Floyd-Walker's Good Luck, a 3 year old DRP stallion bred in Germany by Petra Datema & Frank Janssen. Good Luck's pedigree contains both well known influential DRP stallions and Dutch Welsh bloodlines. He is by Good Looking (FS Golden Highlight x Dornik B), the 2008 Champion Premium stallion at the Rheinisches Pferdestammbuch licensing in Wickrath Germany who is currently being ridden by a 13 year old girl in Germany at L level and they are working towards FEI competitions.
Good Luck’s damline is less well known in the UK but highly sought after in the Netherlands. His dam, High Flown’s Indiana is by Bodo (Coelenhage’s Purioso x Coelenhage’s Let’s Be The Best), who at the stallion shows in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 was Champion under saddle. Also in Good Luck's dam's pedigree is Verona’s Bo-Gi who is an Elite premium jumping stallion bringing more Welsh blood through Vita Nova’s Celesto. Good Luck was already licensed as a WPCS PB and sired his first foal this year, DBM Good Golly Miss Molly, who gained a coveted Gold Premium when assessed by SPSS in September 2015, one of only 8 out of the total 79 evaluated youngstock to do so.

Then followed 11 year old Lyndell Maytrix, another part-bred Welsh passported pony, and he was bred in Wales by Lynda Head and was presented by his owner, Lynda's daughter Lyndsey Bakewell. Lyndsey reports that her late mother always wanted to grade "Max" as a sports pony so his success must have been extra special for her.
Max, who Lyndsey says is one of the family, is by the Oldenburg stallion, Abraham, who is graded Elite with the SHB(GB), and out of a Welsh Section D from Derwen lines who herself was graded into the SHB(GB) Main studbook. Max has done very little competing himself due to Lynda's illness but his daughter, Lyndell Shadowmax, is competing successfully at British Eventing, reaching Novice level as a 5 year old. Max won at the Welsh National Show as a foal and yearling. Then this year, he was 3rd placed Welsh Partbred Stallion at the Royal Welsh and then at Llandysill Show he was 1st In-hand, 1st Ridden and Reserve Champion. |
|
Balfour Whisper, a 7 year old British Riding Pony stallion bred by Natalie Gawley and owned by Joshua Rees, was also successful. Balfour Whisper is by the SPSS graded Welsh part-bred stallion, Strinesdale Matador who was the 2003 Pony of the Year, 2005 HOYS In-hand Supreme Champion and 4 times NPS Supreme Champion. Whisper's dam is Balfour Squirrel's Simone (by the Welsh Section B Thornwood Royalist out of a Bwlch Valentino mare)
Whisper himself has excelled in the show ring with results including Champion Welsh part bred stallion at the 2011 Welsh International Show. His progeny of this stallion are also doing well in the show ring including Borderfields Whisper's Echo who was Reserve Champion at the 2015 North Western Association youngstock show and Nordy Golden Whisper who was 2nd placed 2 year old colt at the same show as well as Supreme Welsh Part-bred and Reserve overall at the NCPA Yorkshire in 2015. Natalie Gawley also bred the 2015 North Wales & North West England Reserve Mare Champion, the 6 year old British Riding Pony, Balfour Butterfly, who is by the Strinesdale Matador son, Fly By Moonlight, and also out of Balfour Squirrel's Simone. |
|
The 8 year old WPCS Sec D, Moorlane Malaki also exceeded the 75% pass mark and was accepted by the SPSS. He is a son of the Section C Betws Enfys who himself successfully graded with the SPSS in 2004 (at the age of 17!). Malaki was bred in England by R Staton and Malaki's dam is Menai Candlas (Pantygronw Deio x Menai Sparkling Magic). Owned by Jo Freer, Malaki has been competing in British Showjumping horse classes since January last year (as Jo is an adult) and has many double clears at 80 & 85 cm. He competed in the Wales & West 90cm Derby at the end of September, going clear and enjoying the challenge of ditches, banks and the devils dyke.
Jo reports that Malaki is extremely versatile as he lives at a busy riding school and regularly escorts hacks as he has impeccable manners around other horses and is also very patient. As well as Showjumping, in 2015 Malaki has also competed in Mountain & Moorland WHP classes and has been consistently placed all season, frequently being the highest placed Welsh. |
|
Fames Dakota, a 5 year old stallion bred by Donna Butcher and owned by Robyn Crisp also met the high standard required. He is a 5 year old "Pitabian" (which is a coloured almost pure-bred Arab) stallion with 99.7% Arab blood and is by Dakota Ink Spots out of MS Fames Jubilee (by Parys El Jamaal). He was backed early in 2015 and has been in training twice a week with Alex Mersh since April. He has been showing in-hand since 2011, winning many part-bred Arab, coloured and sports horse classes including winning the "British National Arab Champion Sports Horse" in 2014.
Fames Dakota has competed 3 times under saddle in dressage events since September 2015 with consistent scores and very positive comments form the judges. Two of his 5 foals have been presented for the BEF Futurity, gaining a higher First Premium and First Premium as well as having successful in-hand careers to date. His yearling filly, Fames Amaryllis had the highest overall score in her section and was also the highest scoring yearling presented at Chelwood Equestrian. She was also awarded an SPSS Premium at the youngstock evaluation the day before the stallion grading. |
|
Finally, the WPCS Sec D, Abbeyvale Romeo was also successful. Bred in England by Mr M Edwards and owned by Chelsey Ann Leeman, the 3 year old paolomin is by Dearnevally Golden Image out of Abbeyvale Peggy (by Ebbw Magic). From a long line of champion Welsh cobs, Romeo was backed in spring 2015 and has since been training with team GB dressage rider Emma Corbett. Chelsey reports that so far he has taken everything in his stride and proved to be very willing, trainable and totally fearless.
Romeo has also been shown in hand very lightly. In only a few outings he qualified for the TSR Showing championships, the Equestrian Life Showing Championships and the Blue Chip Showing Championships representing his breed. He also came 4th at The Great Yorkshire Show in the Welsh Section D 2/3 year old colt class. Romei's first foal is due in April 2016.

South West England - 21st September 2015 at Tall Trees Arena, Cornwall
The inaugural SPSS Mare Grading and Youngstock Evaluation Tour started at Tall Trees Arena, Cornwall, and a good number of the South-West’s Sports Pony breeders and owners took advantage of the accessibility of this event and brought their mares for grading and youngstock for evaluation. With both the grading & evaluation aspects being open to sports ponies and small sports horses (up to 158cm) of any breeding, the judges, Herr Hans-Heinrich Brüning from the German Hanoverian Studbook and Mrs Jacke Mathieson from the SPSS, were delighted with the quality of entrants with both the Champion and Reserve Champion Mares scoring over 80% to go into the prestigious SPSS Head Studbook. |
|
The South West Mare Champion was the Irish-bred Connemara Blackwoodland Canterbury Bella who is by Gurteen Paddy out of Blackwood Silverbell (by Coosheen Finnegan). A 142cm 7 year old bred by Anthony & Janice Linden and owned by Cynthia Robinson, Bella impressed the judges with her jumping gaining a 9 for her loose jumping and an even more impressive 9.5 when she jumped under saddle ridden by Cynthia’s daughter Ellie. Cynthia has only owned Bella since November last year but Bella and Ellie have already had plenty of success at show jumping and eventing at Pony Club, Riding Club and British Eventing competitions (including a 5th and an 8th at BE90 level).
The British-bred Coswarth Peridot was the Reserve Champion Mare. Peridot has a Sports Horse Breeding of Great Britain passport and is by the part-bred Arab Fairground Attraction of Coswarth out of Lady Mulberry Hill, a Thoroughbred by Hill Farmer. Peridot, a 151cms 8 year old, was bred by Cheryl Fox who sold her as a two year old but then after Peridot had shown herself to be versatile across country, showjumping and in dressage, bought her back last year to use as a brood mare. Cheryl intends to put Peridot in foal next year using some frozen semen from one of her homebred riding ponies with the dual aim of protecting the old pony bloodlines and breeding a super child’s sports pony. Peridot also scored highly for her loose jumping as well as for temperament and general impression. |

South Wales - Triley Fields Equestrian Centre - 22nd September
The second day of the Tour saw the SPSS team move on to Triley Fields Equestrian Centre in Monmouthshire Once again, the event was well supported with people travelling to the event from England as well as from the West coast of Wales.
The South Wales Mare Champion was the British Sports Horse Middleton, a 155cm 4 year old bred and owned by Adele Hayton. Middleton is by the Danish-bred Midnight Stars out of the SPSS graded Oldenburg Chaneira (by Don Larino) who is also the dam of the 2015 British Dressage National Medium Restricted Champion, SPSS passported Cruz III (who is by SPSS Elite stallion Caesar 171). Middleton has yet not competed as she is being brought on slowly by Adele.
The Reserve Champion was the 6 year old British-bred pony Desana, who is by the international dressage horse Diamond Hit out of a mare by West Country. Bred by Ann Luckman and passported by the British Hanoverian Horse Society, Desana is on loan to Georgie Webb, who presented her for grading and impressed the judges in the ridden assessment. |
North Wales & North West England - Maelor Equestrian Centre - 23rd September
Day 3 of the Tour was at Maelor Equestrian Centre in Flintshire, which was convenient for both North Wales and North West England and entrants came from both areas.
The North Wales Champion, Landslow Melody Maker, is a British-bred Connemara pony who is by her owner/breeder Barbara Bagshaw’s own stallion Ardbear Spirit out of Drimcong Colleen (by Marvyn Pookhaun). Melody was presented on Barbara’s behalf by Jo Callwood and the judges commented that she was a “super jockey”. Scoring 9s for her loose jumping and for the general impression as well as other scores of 8 or more, Melody scored over 80% so went into the prestigious SPSS Head Studbook
The Reserve Champion was Natalie Gawley’s home bred 6 year old British Riding Pony, Balfour Butterfly, who is by Fly By Moonlight out of Balfour Squirrel's Simone (by the Welsh Section B Thornwood Royalist). Butterfly was presented by Natalie’s niece, Sophie Boyce, who is her regular rider, winning at dressage and show jumping as well as in the show ring.
In addition, in North Wales, two mares were awarded the ultimate accolade of Elite Graded status, Meirion Jones’ Howellfly Rosie, a 21 year old Welsh Section C (by Glantraeth Sion) who was bred by H W Roberts and Sally Harris’ home bred 28 year old part-bred Arab Morrigan Jemima (by Sharaza). In both cases this was in recognition of them being the dam of a pony that has represented Great Britain in international competition.

North East England - Leamside Equestrian - 24th September
Day 4 saw the SPSS team in the North-East near Durham at Leamside Equesrian where our hosts, Bev and Sam Brown took advantage of having the event "at home" to present 7 mares for grading but there were also outside mares (and yougstock) presented to our judges.
The Champion mare, No Promises, a 9 year old Oldenburg by Leamside’s own senior stallion, SPSS Elite graded Caesar 171 is out of the Oldenburg Walli (by Don Primero). Bred by Portia Manning & Birgit Galloway and owned by Leamside Equestrian Ltd, her score of over 80% was the second highest of the 5 day tour.
In contrast to No Promise’s German breeding (although Caesar 171 has 2 Welsh Section B grandparents), the Reserve Champion mare, Jipson Jenny Wren, has very traditional British pony breeding being a British Riding Pony by Bradmore Toy Soldier out of Deanhills Kittiwake (by Sandbourne Royal Ensign). Also smaller, at 133cm, this 12 year old was bred by Mrs J A Weedon and was acquired by Leamside specifically to put in foal to their youngest SPSS Elite graded stallion, LE Chiffre, who was the first SPSS passported pony to compete internationally and earn his Elite status as a stallion. |
South Scotland - Romanno Stud - 25th September
The last day of the tour saw the SPSS team at two Scottish venues, starting in the morning at Romanno Stud.
The South Scotland Champion mare, Mystique, a six year old, 152cm Scottish Sport Horse by Argentino out of Mirage (by Voyage), was bred by Debbie Bridges and is owned by Shannon Stewart who has shown her successfully to date including winning County Show Championships and is planning to compete her in dressage next year. Scoring nearly 85%, the highest score of the 5 day tour, the judges’ described Mystique as “superb” and she went into the prestigious SPSS Head Studbook before ultimately becoming the 2015 SPSS Supreme Mare Champion with the highest score over al 62 mares graded.
The Reserve Champion mare at this location, Zalmerina, who is by Rubin Star N out of Hojvangs Zelina (by Zalmeco) also went into the Head Studbook. Again bred in Scotland (by Hilary Crane), Zalmerina is passported by the German Oldenberg studbook and had only recently been bought by Romanno Stud and Shannon Stewart.
While at Romanno Stud, the judges also presented the stud’s SPSS graded stallion Boss Junior (by Boss) with the ultimate SPSS accolade of Elite Graded status in recognition of his successful progeny, including the international dressage pony, Best Before Midnight. |

Central Scotland - Lochlane Stud - 25th September
The judges and the rest of the SPSS tour team then moved on to Lochlane Stud in Central Scotland, where they were thrilled to not only award the Champion mare title to the stud’s own mare Magic but also to announce that she was also to join the select group of SPSS Elite ponies as she is the dam of Dutch Junior and Young Rider International horse Sandman (by Ragazzo). Bred in the Netherlands and passported by the KWPN, Magic is by the top dressage sire, Donnerhall out Janey (by Variant) and was a successful competition pony herself before becoming a broodmare. As Magic is now retiring from breeding, her owner Jean Feeney and her daughter Catherine were absolutely delighted that, this year, Magic had a filly foal (by SPSS Elite graded stallion, Bernwode Brokat).
The Central Scotland Reserve Champion mare title went to Sophie & Henry Church’s Irish-bred small horse Rockridge Cassandra who is by Limmerick out of Milady Jasmine (by Vivaldi XI). An 8 year old, Cassandra has been successfully competing at dressage for the last year and is now showing great scope jumping with Sophie. |
Central England - Keysoe - 16th October
The final Mare Grading was held slightly later in the year, the day before the Stallion Grading, but the same judges officiated, so the results were consistent with those on the September Tour. Another well supported venue, with great quality mares with four of them gaining 80% or more - which is the highest number at any one of the 2015 gradings.
The Mare Champion was Sarah Rook's homebred Stambrook Miss D'Mena who is by the renown German sire, FS Don't Worry, out of Stambrook Miss Go Lightly, a JA show jumping pony herself and a daughter Stambrook Milady by the Thoroughbred, Tsing Lite. In the winning Quadrille team at Olympia 2014, 6 year old Miss D'Mena competes and has been placed in HOYS WHP qualifiers and has been competing at British Eventing BE90 and BE100 level this summer with 13 year old Mollie Harris, jumping double clears in all of her 3 events and gaining 14 BE Foundation Points. Mollie, who has only been riding Miss D'Mena for 4 months, rode Miss D'Mena as part of her grading assessment and the two scores of 9 (flatwork and jumping are marked separately) gave Miss D'Mena this highest combined riding mark awarded to any pony (mare or stallion) across all the 2015 SPSS Gradings. Miss D'Mena's score of 83.33% not only put her into the SPSS Head Studbook but also lead to her being proclaimed the 2015 Reserve Supreme Champion Mare.
Also with a Head Studbook score of over 80% (81.33%) and homebred, the Central England Reserve Champion was Tessa Frost's Wayward Windless. By the coloured stallion Goshka Ringo, Windless is out of Miss Poppy whose unknown breeding meant that Windlass went into the Prelim Studbook as 3 generations of verified pedigree are required for the Head Studbook. Like the Champion, 6 year old Windless has also been eventing this summer, finishing the season with a double clear with few time faults at BE90 level ridden by Tessa. |
